Sally

We received a call from a Marion County Animal Control officer about a dog at the Animal Center. The officer loved hounds and she told us that this dog, a Treeing Walker Coonhound was sweet and shy, but was so thin and sickly that she would probably be euthanized.

She was seriously underweight, had bloody pressure sores all over her body and was heartworm positive. It also appeared that she had recently had puppies.

Sally had pressure sores all over her body and had heartworms.

We picked her up the next morning right after she had been spayed at the Animal Center. She was groggy and cold and seemed only to want to snuggle under the blankets we put her on in the back seat.

At home, all she did was eat and sleep for 3 days. It was as if she had been through quite an ordeal, although we had no idea what had happened to her before arriving at the shelter.

Sally slept for thee days... only getting up to eat.

We decided to name her Sally, since she was long and tall as in the rock and roll song.

Slowly, Sally began to come around. Although painfully shy and frightened, especially of men she began to accept her new home and companions. Although we offered her treats and toys, she seemed not to know what to do with them, although her appetite was healthy at mealtime. She received treatment for heartworms and the pressure sores and as her body began to heal and gain weight, Sally also gained confidence, running and playing with the rest of the dogs on their morning hike through the woods and finishing with a swim in the pond.

Sally enjoys a swim in the sanctuaries pond.

Sally had a mammary tumor which required surgery about a month after her arrival. She is doing fine and although she is terrified of thunderstorms, seems to otherwise be adjusting well to life on the farm.

She is a lovely girl and loves more than anything to put her nose to the ground and run as all hounds do. She is equally happy running in the woods and snoozing on her cushion beside the bed.

Today Sally is happy and healthy.
